A photo that saves as a multi-megabyte PNG typically lands in the hundreds of kilobytes as JPG, with no visible change at 80–90% quality.

Questions
Why did my transparent background turn white?+
JPG has no alpha channel, so there is nowhere to store transparency. Any transparent pixel is flattened onto white when the file is written. If you need to keep alpha, stay with PNG or WebP.
How much smaller will the file be?+
Photographs usually drop to a tenth of the PNG size or less. Flat graphics and screenshots are the exception — those can end up larger or visibly softer, so check the result.
What quality should I use?+
Start at 90% for a safe archive copy. For web photos, 70–80% is normally indistinguishable and much lighter. Drop below 60% only when a hard upload limit forces you to.
Can I resize and convert at the same time?+
Not in one step — use the Resize tool to set the dimensions first, then run the smaller image through this converter. That order gives you the tightest file size.
